Trojans falter on the road against the Wildcats

The USC men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams had solid showings in the desert with the men’s team going 1-1 and the women going 2-0 in the teams’ first Pac-12 action.

The men lost on Friday to Arizona, 193.5-106.5, but rebounded to beat the Arizona State Sun Devils Saturday, 198-197. Highlighting the efforts in Tuscon were sophomore Vladimir Morozov, who won the 100-yard freestyle, and junior Chad Bobrosky, who won the 1,000-yard freestyle. Other winners included junior Justin DiFederico in the 200-yard fly and sophomore Dimitri Colupaev in the 200-yard freestyle.

The Trojans faired better during Saturday’s competition, with Colupaev winning the 200-yard freestyle and the 200-yard medley relay. Freshman Andrew Malone took first in the 100-yard breaststroke and Vladimir Morozov won the 50-yard freestyle. Junior Alex Lendrum took first in the 100-yard backstroke event.

On the women’s side, the weekend was highlighted by senior Katinka Hosszu, who won a total of five events over the course of two days. Against Arizona, she won the 200-yard backstroke, the 400-yard individual medley, and was part of the winning 400-yard freestyle relay team on Friday. Other winners against the Wildcats were junior Haley Anderson, who won the 500-yard freestyle and 1000-yard freestyle, and senior Victoria Ishimatsu, who won the 1-meter and 3-meter diving events. The Trojans beat the Wildcats 156-144.

Saturday brought more success for the women’s team, where it beat Arizona State, 198-99. Hosszu’s concluded her weekend winning the 200-yard freestyle and the 200-yard breaststroke. Anderson won the 1,000-yard freestyle and Amanda Smith won the 200-yard fly. Megan Hawthorne also won the 200-yard backstroke. Ishimatsu dominated the diving board once again, winning the 1-meter and 3-meter events.
