SAE charter revoked for three years

The California Gamma chapter of Sigma Alpha Epsilon at USC will close for the next three years based on a decision made by the fraternity’s national council yesterday evening.

“Basically their national organization was concerned about the chapter and, after thorough investigation and conversations with members of the chapter, they had reason to believe that the chapter wasn’t upholding the values of their national standards,” said Tanner Sandoval, president of the Interfraternity Council.

The decision was made by the national organization alone. Sandoval said the university was not involved.

SAE’s house on 28th Street, which is owned by the fraternity’s national council, will no longer be occupied by members of the fraternity.

SAE Chapter President Matthew Kasten declined to comment on the matter.

In March, SAE’s national council announced it would ban the pledging process on a national scale due to deadly incidents at chapters throughout the country. At the time, the fraternity had seen 10 alcohol-related deaths since 2006.

USC’s chapter of SAE was put on probation in October 2013 after a Loyola Marymount University student sustained serious injuries from falling off a table at a party at the fraternity house. The university also imposed sanctions on The Row following the incident due to a string of alcohol-related transports.
