Oliver Stone at Book Soup

Oliver Stone is no stranger to American history. As director of JFK and Nixon, he recollected history in his own intriguing, arguably factual way. Now, Stone has returned with a Showtime series — a more expansive look at American history — and a companion novel, The Untold History of the United States.

At Book Soup, Stone will discuss this latest project, which will surely be as thought-provoking as his other politically charged works.

Admission is free, but the book — an advisable read for those that plan on watching the series — will cost $30.

 

Alanis Morissette

As part of her Guardian Angel Tour, Alanis Morissette teams up with Souleye at Club Nokia on Friday night.

The pop rock singer-songwriter has shaken the foundations of the music industry with her signature style and classic songs such as “Ironic” and “You Oughta Know.” Her latest release, Havoc and Bright Lights, has proved equally impressive. Popular tracks such as “Guardian” and “Edge of Evolution” demonstrate the artist’s staying power with her eighth addition to the music scene.

And if her top-notch songwriting skills weren’t enough, Morissette also stuns with her live performances. With her strong mezzo voice and exceptional guitar skills, the Canadian-American artist knows how to entertain an audience. Whatever your reason for attending the concert, Morissette is sure to leave you “Head Over Feet.”

HARD Haunted Mansion presents Day of the Dead

 Halloween didn’t end on Wednesday — at least, not for the big kids who’ll be heading deep into Downtown this weekend for one costume-packed rave.Araabmuzik and Dillon Francis are among two major artists performing at Day of the Dead. And choosing which night-cap performance to attend — Justice or Diplo — is the best kind of problem to have.And though trick-or-treating will long be over, Los Angeles State Historic Park’s close proximity to Chinatown means you’ll have plenty of crave-worthy food options after the shows have ended.

 Got a stomachache from binging on Halloween candy?Recover this weekend with the Good Food Festival and Conference. The festival supports organic, homegrown fruits and veggies and strives to enlighten Angelinos on the practices required for growing healthy food. Now in its second year, The Good Food Festival and Conference connects national members of the Good Food movement and offers  diverse workshops on issues such as urban barn raising.But even if you’re not into growing your own produce, check out the Los Angeles County Museum of Art’s discussions on national food system issues. With topics such as “Building Community with Food” and tours centered around food-inspired art, LACMA’s addition to the festival will get your mouth watering.
