Mom and Pop Up Shop

For those of you rocking a homemade beaded embroidered cuff or maybe a customized Jane Eyre T-shirt, you’ll feel right at home at the Mom and Pop Up Shop, co-hosted by Crafted and the SoCal Etsy Guild this Saturday. The one-day collaboration will feature more than 50 vendors selling one-of-a-kind art, handmade or vintage items and artisanal food. There will also be live music and food trucks on hand for those looking to do more than just shop. Etsy is based on the Finnish word “etsi,” meaning search, and the Mom and Pop Up Shop is sure to let you do that to your heart’s content. Who knows, maybe you’ll finally find that elusive specimen of jackalope feltidermy you’ve been searching for.

Oooh la la — Paris has made its way to Los Angeles. Le Grand Fooding Crush, an event that has taken place in New York for four consecutive years, is finally being held in L.A., where celebrity chefs will celebrate the culinary love affair between Paris and Los Angeles through — what else but food! In regard to Angeleno fare, celebrity chefs Jose Centeno, Ludo Lefebvre and Roy Choi will prepare dishes — new and old — including amberjack ceviche and short rib tacos. Attendees can also expect great desserts, provided by Lemonade L.A., in the form of chocolate caramel candy cups and warm honey lavender pies.

 

Atwater Village Festival

Just because finals are approaching doesn’t mean that you have to keep your head buried in the books — give yourself a well-deserved break. The trendy hipster neighborhood at Atwater Village will be hosting its first annual beer, wine and food festival. Hosting more than a dozen local breweries, there will be many different kinds of ales for you to try. Not 21 yet? There will also be a variety of vendors selling food, not to mention live entertainment, including a special performance by The Black Eyed Peas’ DJ. So take part in some Atwater Village history: Eat, drink and be merry!

 

Doo Dah Day Parade

Let your freak flag fly at the 36th annual Doo Dah Day Parade in Pasadena. The parade, considered to be the public face of the “high weirdness” that manifests itself through the Pasadena area, promises to be a day full of wacky and quirky fun. Some of the silliest marchers on the parade route include the BBQ & Hibachi Marching Grill Team (which cooks hot dogs along the parade route and then shoots them from “brat-zookas” into the crowd) and the robotic spitting cat named Boo-Boo Kitty (reportedly, in the cat’s final appearance). With so much lighthearted silliness, by the end of the day, you too might find yourself whistling to the namesake of the festival. “Camptown races sing this song, oh the dooh-dah day,” indeed.
