HIDDEN ON MOBILE

You can test this in “Inspect element” mode.
Hiding empty columns is crucial; empty columns still generate whitespace, which, when columns are displayed as stacked on mobile devices, becomes excessive and ruins the page design.
All page templates are set to have empty columns hidden on mobile devices. But when creating new Grid Rows, this will not be applied.
To manually hide columns on mobile devices:
  • Hover over the column, and click the Edit button (pencil-and-paper icon) that appears.
  • Click the Advanced tab.
  • Under “Responsive,” set the first dropdown to “Hide on mobile devices.”
  • Click “Save.”
The default column widths of a default article are 1/4-1/2-1/4. (The left and right columns are whitespace.)

Anatomy of a default article

This page aims to serve as a guide to the basics of the new layout, as built in the Advanced Layout Editor.

hed should be Heading 1; dek should be Paragraph
By JONATHAN PARK
byline should be in Heading 6. only the writer’s name should be in ALL CAPS, e.g. “By ANNE SMITH”
Note that this must be changed manually.
For articles for which multiple photos by the same photographer are used, add a second byline underneath the first, also in heading 6, e.g. “PHOTOS: ANNE SMITH”
August 9, 2023
This Post Metadata element automatically displays the publishing date of the article. You do not need to make any changes to this element.

All images, whether photographs, artworks or designs, should be placed using an Image element and a separate Text Block element underneath.
When choosing the image in the Image element: Having selected the image in the Media Library, a dropdown menu should appear in the right sidebar, under “ATTACHMENT DISPLAY SETTINGS.” Always select the “Large” option if possible; this helps minimize loading times if the image is especially large. If the Original Size and Large versions have similar dimensions, select Original Size.
Captions and image attributions should always be in Heading 6.

HIDDEN ON MOBILE

Article text goes here. Note that it is in a separate Grid Row element, to more cleanly show the hed, dek and cover photo without advertisements appearing on the side.
DO NOT place images directly within a Text Block via “Add Media”. Exit the Text Block (having pressed “Save”), grab a Image element (under Media Elements), then select your image from the Media Library there. You can then add a separate Text Block underneath that Image element for your photo caption. See the cover photo for an example.
You will need to split the article text before and after the image into two different Text Blocks.
