Fontan has ACL surgery

USC senior guard Jio Fontan started his long recovery back to the basketball team Tuesday morning as he underwent surgery on his torn left anterior cruciate ligament at the Kerlan-Jobe Surgery Center in Los Angeles,  according to a USC press release.

“Jio had successful surgery [Tuesday] and is recovering well,” USC associate head coach Bob Cantu said via Twitter. “We are wishing him the best and know he will be back to have a great senior [year].”

Last season Fontan was second on USC’s basketball team in points per game (10.5) and assists per game (four).

Fontan, who was slated to be the Trojans’ star player this season, will likely miss the entire season after he injured himself during the USC basketball team’s tour in Brazil on Aug. 16.

Fontan averaged 28.5 points per game in the first two games of the tour before he hurt his knee.
