Right across the street from Taper Hall, nestled in a small courtyard, sits the Good Karma Café that serves all-you-can-eat vegetarian buffet open to the public. Organized by the Office of Religious Life and the United University Church, the Good Karma Café offers unlimited food for only $10.

Tuesdays they serve Indian food, and Wednesday’s they serve pasta. Though I cannot attest to the pasta, I can definitely assure you that the Indian food on Tuesday is worth your money.

On the day I was there, they were serving Kitcheree, a curried basmati rice with Mung beans, vegetables, herbs and spices. I could sense the curry’s aroma the very moment I walked down the stairs and into the restaurant. As with any typical Indian food, the rice was rich with spicy flavor. There was also the option to add hot sauce, but they say it tends to vary in strength, so sometimes one spoonful could be more than enough.

Good Karma also had an organic spring mixed salad with Divya’s Almond Dressing. THough the salad itself was rather uncreative, consisting of mainly leafy greens, the creamy dressing made it special. Its exquisite taste made me want to put it on top of everything on my plate, not just the salad.

For dessert, they had blueberry Halava, which is a flour based Middle Eastern dessert and for drinks, Guanabana lemonade. Their sweet lemonade was freshly made and refreshing for a hot spring day.

In addition to the great food, the café’s possesses quite a friendly ambience. Everyone comes in with containers to take home seconds, something that’s actually strongly encouraged. The sitting area is cafeteria-style, with large round tables where people sit down and strike up conversations with complete strangers. The owners have Indian music playing softly in the background, and you can choose to also sit outside and enjoy the warm California sun.

If you are free Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m., you should definitely try it out. There is honestly no other healthier and better option on campus than the Good Karma Café.
