Eli’s DT 4-1-1: Week of 9/28

USC News

  • Justice For Janitors: This past month, 200 janitorial and custodial staff members at USC marched through campus calling for higher wages and better health care benefits. Contract negotiations can take months, so the service workers decided to stage rallies instead. Turns out the protest had a lot to do with paying rent and living comfortably in Los Angeles.
    • The 411: The USC staff can’t afford to live near the university, and they can’t enjoy social benefits. Yeah, I don’t think that’s a good thing either.

Campus Leaders

College Life

  • Midterm Meltdown: It’s that time of year fellow Trojans, and the sleep deprivation might be getting to you. Here are 4 ways to maximize your time during midterm season.
    • The 411: Remember, sleeping is the second greatest thing in the world. The first is always a tie between Bill Murray and Neil Patrick Harris.
  • Roommate Recon: Dealing with a bad roommate? Is your personal space being invaded? Take a look at this advice on roommate etiquette.
    • The 411: Sometimes you just gotta be honest with people. Except when they ask you if they look fat. If so, then run away as fast as you can!

Student Voices

  • Issue: Will Mayor Eric Garcetti’s new plan to tackle homelessness in Los Angeles work?
    • Point: “Ultimately, the homelessness problem in Los Angeles isn’t just a government issue; it’s a community issue. A walk around USC’s perimeter is a clear indication that there should be more sympathy and engagement with the people often classified as second-class citizens.” – Danni Wang, DT Lifestyle Editor
    • Counterpoint: “Such funding can be the beginning of a sustainable anti-poverty movement, but it must be spent effectively. For those of us who would desperately like the streets around USC to be a little more accommodating to its homeless: It’s a good time to be optimistic — but don’t hold your breath.” – Sonali Seth, DT Editorial Director
    • The 411: Is it a worthwhile investment and is it even possible to eradicate homelessness?

Sports

  • The Comeback: We can now breathe a sigh of relief. The Trojans defeated the Sun Devils and it was one heck of a game. Now, it’s time for the football team to make the most of bye week and saddle up for their matchup against the Huskies.
    • The 411: “The question isn’t ‘what are we going to do.’ The question is ‘what aren’t we going to do?’” – Ferris Bueller’s Day Off (1986)
  • Fore!!!: USC’s No. 2 women’s golf team opened with a 23-stroke victory. Four of our golfers were in the top 7 and they almost broke a record.
    • The 411: “It’s in the hole!” – Caddyshack (1980)

Pop Culture

  • J-Law Gets Political: Jennifer Lawrence said if Donald Trump became president it would be the end of the world. She also thinks his candidacy is a publicity stunt. Is it too late for the Trumpster to play President Snow in the Hunger Games?
    • The 411: The odds seem to be in his favor, but the Mockingjay does not approve of Donald’s HUGE ego.

Bonus: Science

  • Water on Mars: Earlier this week, NASA scientists confirmed the existence of flowing water on the surface of Mars. The discovery didn’t give evidence of life on the red planet, but boy, did it boost their hopes of finding some aliens out there in the last frontier.
    • The 411: Is it a coincidence The Martian arrived in movie theaters this week? Or is Ridley Scott a genius? The world may never know.
