Members of the Service Employees International Union protested outside Virgil Junior High in Los Angeles Wednesday morning to protest the school furloughs. Teachers and staff are unpaid on cut school days.
Students will return to the classroom a week later, as part of an effort to reduce costs incurred by the second-largest school system in the nation. The district is currently facing a budget deficit of $640 million.
Some high schools began school early in an effort to prepare students for state testing in May. These schools include Arleta, Sun Valley and Polytechnic high schools.
