Trojans down by four at halftime
An even worse second quarter for USC has resulted in a 14-10 Huskies lead at halftime. While the offense has been lackluster, bad penalties have overpowered the game in a big way during USC’s Homecoming game.
Redshirt senior quarterback Jayden Maiava has completed 12 of his 18 passes for 143 yards, but an interception in the second quarter has overshadowed his performance.
If USC didn’t have so many penalties, the story of the game might be different. However, the penalties on offense and defense have resulted in a halftime score not favoring the Trojans. The defense has been otherwise strong, pressuring Washington’s junior quarterback Demond Williams Jr. and limiting him to just 80 combined yards in the air and on the ground.

- A big-time matchup against a former Pac-12 foe could allow for the Trojans to reenter the win column. Washington brings a formidable team to Los Angeles, with a strong defense that has been able to stop opposing offenses in their first four games.
- Freshman wide receiver Kayden Dixon-Wyatt has found his place in USC’s offense, recording over 100 receiving yards in three games this season. The local recruit from Mater Dei High School looks to improve as a true freshman in each passing game.
- After everything that’s happened this year to the football team, Sports Editor Dillon Zamperin asks what is wrong with the culture surrounding the team. Whether it boils down to Head Coach Lincoln Riley or not, Zamperin thinks something must change, and quickly.

Boos rain down at the Coliseum as another penalty — unsportsmanlike conduct — is called on USC’s senior offensive lineman Alani Noa and results in a Trojan punt.
Carrigan’s punt rolled all the way to the half-yard line, marking one of the few highlights for USC today. The Huskies will have less than a minute to drive downfield.

Penalties have affected both sides of the ball for USC, as what would have been a huge sack for freshman edge Luke Wafle turned into a 15-yard gain on a facemask penalty from Wafle.
The Huskies are now in the red zone and threatening quickly.

A penalty took away a touchdown from freshman wide receiver Kayden Dixon-Wyatt, who was in the end zone for his first catch of the game. Instead, Maiava got sacked and fell hard on third down, forcing sophomore punter Lachlan Carrigan to kick away the ball. The Huskies have the ball on their own 20-yard line.

A third three-and-out forced by the Trojan defense has demonstrated a side USC has not seen since the shutout against Fresno State University earlier this season.
Sophomore defensive tackle Jahkeem Stewart put pressure on Williams on third down, forcing the gunslinger to throw the ball out of bounds.

Trojans down 7-3 through one quarter
Following inconsistencies on offense for USC, the Trojans find themselves behind as the first quarter ends. Redshirt senior quarterback Jayden Maiava has completed four of his seven pass attempts for 48 yards, while redshirt sophomore running back King Miller has already racked up 49 rushing yards.
USC’s defense has looked considerably better, despite allowing a touchdown near the end of the quarter. The squad has forced two three-and-outs and even recorded a sack thanks to redshirt junior linebacker Ta’Mere Robinson.
A muffed punt by junior wide receiver Terrell Anderson nearly resulted in a disastrous first quarter for the Trojans, but instead, USC’s offense lacked rhythm, which it looks to change in the second quarter.

After stopping Washington for a second straight three-and-out, junior wide receiver Terrell Anderson muffed the punt on USC’s 1-yard line. The Trojans, however, were able to jump on the ball after further review by the referees, thanks to a recovery by redshirt freshman safety Trestin Castro.
USC catches a huge break but will have the entire field to drive down, leaving no room for error.
