Explore LA: Fun things to do off campus this weekend
As one of the most vibrant cities in the world, Los Angeles has plenty of exciting things to do and places to visit. If you don’t know about them already, consider this list a guide for finding some interesting activities to do this weekend in L.A.:
1. Visit The Broad, L.A.’s Newest Contemporary Art museum
Deemed the “Most Instagram-Worthy Museum in the World” by Town and Country Magazine, there are several reasons why you should consider putting the Broad Museum on your checklist for places to visit in downtown L.A. The Broad, a $140 million building project, is an approximately 120,000 square-foot space that showcases some of the most beautiful art collections in the country. There is Japanese artist Yayoi Kusuma’s Infinity Mirrored Room-The Soul of Millions of Light Years Away, where visitors are allowed to enter one at time for forty-five seconds to enjoy the extraordinary spectacle of tiny brilliant lights and mirrors producing the illusion of being in outer space surrounded by dazzling stars. You won’t have to break the bank either — the museum offers free general admission to the public.
2. Go to PaintNite
Looking for something fun to do for a night out on the town? Ask your friends or date to go to PaintNite, a two-hour painting event that allows you to create art over drinks. PaintNite is available at local bars and restaurants. Beginners are welcome — no experience necessary. With a professional artist giving instructions on how to paint, you are sure to have a great time while socializing and exercising your creativity at the same time!
3. Check out Queen Mary’s Dark Harbor
This annual Halloween tradition in Long Beach is not be missed. Check out Queen Mary’s Dark Harbor, which features special attractions, entertainment, food, drinks and more. You will have a unique haunted experience and get an opportunity to tour the Queen Mary, once the most luxurious ocean liner and nicknamed the “haunted ship” because of rumored paranormal activity.
4. Take a Trip to Olvera Street
This historical Mexican marketplace, located in the oldest part of downtown L.A., offers many authentic Mexican restaurants, interesting souvenir shops, vendor stalls and a rare look into traditional Latino culture. If you’re a fan of churros look out for Mr. Churro, an underrated shop on Olvera Street specializing in freshly made churros with delicious fillings such as caramel, chocolate and custard.
5. Visit the Flower District
The Flower District is open every day except Sunday and offers a wide variety of floral offerings from all over the globe. In the marketplace’s 50,000-square-foot space, you will also be able to find the best locally grown floral arrangements and selections. Discover fresh roses, carnations, orchids, hydrangeas, daisies, lilies and many more flowers of all sizes and colors.
