EVK regains its ‘A’ after second health inspection

The front door of Everybody’s Kitchen once again bears an “A” health rating after another inspection by the Los Angeles County Health Department.

After receiving a “B” rating on Sept. 9, the dining hall was given an “A” in a follow-up inspection on Sept. 17. The cafeteria earned 100 points, the maximum amount possible.

“There were no violations at all on the two-page inspection report,” said Mabel Gale, an environmental health specialist with the Department of Public Health.

EVK has worked on keeping up with standard operating procedures and has repaired the faulty equipment that was found in the first inspection, said Kris Klinger, director of USC Hospitality.

“We had a staff meeting to share the results of the initial inspection and revisited all the safety measures that we have in place. We’re making sure that we’re moving forward,” Klinger said.

He said he expects all USC Hospitality dining facilities to receive “A” ratings, and that the recent “B” was not the standard.

“It was disappointing, but we have taken the necessary precautions,” Klinger said.

Many students, such as David Johnson, a junior majoring in biomedical engineering, said they would like to know that they are eating at a safe place.

“Everyone expects the dining halls on campus to be at a certain level,” Johnson said.

Despite the dip in ratings, however, others said they were not deterred from eating at EVK.

“Personally, I don’t care. As long as you make healthy choices for yourself,” said Janet Huang, a freshman majoring in international relations (global business).

EVK will be subject to another routine inspection in the next four to five months. If, at the time, the dining hall receives a rating lower than an “A,” the option to request another follow-up inspection will not be open to the university, Gale said.
